Project
Thrive is an accredited early intervention program for infants
and young children with developmental disabilities. Children
in this program range in age from birth to five years. Nurtured
in a warm, loving atmosphere, these children are offered
a combination of educational techniques and specialized
therapies that enable them to acquire skills that they would
not necessarily develop on their own. Most Project Thrive
students enter the Miami Dade County Public Schools upon
graduation from the program but continue to rely on Arc,
South Florida for access to other support services. Project
Thrive centers are located in Kendall, Goulds and Florida
City. The same program (Project Thrive-Homebound) is provided
in the homes of those children who are either too young
or too fragile to travel. Transportation is provided when
necessary.

Continuation
of services for Arc’s children ages 3 to 5 was a long-term
goal of the Association for Retarded Citizens, South Florida;
and building a supportive partnership for the creation of
an inclusive program was a dream that everyone shared. In
2001 the dream became a reality with the opening of two
Head Start programs at the Kendall Center location. The
Arc/Head Start project was achieved through the combined
efforts and collaboration of Arc, the local Community Action
Agency of Miami-Dade County, and Head Start programs. This
wonderful program between two federally funded programs
that share the common objectives of servicing children,
provides all children a natural educational/therapeutic
setting where children with special needs and typical children
can learn, play and form lasting friendships. The program
services 40 children with 50 % inclusion.

The
Sandor Wiener School of Opportunity is a new charter school
designed to provide academically progressive education incorporating
educationally relevant therapies. The focus of the population
are students that exhibit severe developmental delays and
medical issues. An individualized curriculum is designed
and implemented based on each child’s needs; focusing on
the use of computers and communication technology promoting
access to the child’s environment. Initially, the target
age is Pre-kindergarten through second grade with yearly
expansion to cap enrollment through grade five.
The student staff ratio is a maximum of four students
per one staff and in most cases two to three students. Staff
includes but not limited to: teachers certified in Special
Education with State of Florida certification, CDA certified
paraprofessionals and one each: physical therapist, occupational
therapist, speech pathologist and nurse. This early classroom
experience with intensive specialized attention and technological
support will hopefully result in a successful transition
into an inclusive school program.
The Sandor Wiener School opened August 26 of 2002 and
is currently accepting applications
